At the thought of the family holiday in the Allgäu, pictures with picturesque green meadows and a variety of cows immediately rise in front of the inner eye or a large portion of steaming cheese spaetzle with roasted onions. This is really close to what the Allgäu embodies, but there is so much more. In this post we show you the most beautiful places we have discovered in the Unterallgäu for families. Because one thing is clearly to be discovered, there is a lot in the Allgäu. Above all, some innovative, new-thinking projects are sprouting out of the ground that we particularly liked.
An accommodation where young and old just feel comfortable
We start our family holiday in the Allgäu in our Favorite accommodation d’Kammer. In the former farmhouse, 3 sleeping chambers with style and attention to detail have been created. Where the farm operation used to take place, you can now find a colorful playground for the children, space for a campfire and much more. Julia spoils guests who literally use the word with a breakfast menu, as no hotel has ever seen. What comes on the table is either homemade or comes from the surrounding villages. The dishes change daily and you can be surprised by what Julia conjures up for you. One thing is for sure, it will inspire you. We stay at the breakfast table for a long time and the Kids play in the yard with the Kettcar or tinker in the barn with wood. Vacation can be so comfortable.
Mountain view and lush green pastures on the hike to the Iller suspension bridge
After we have finally torn ourselves away from the breakfast table, we are looking for movement. We make our way to the 10 minutes away Wanderparkplatz Unterau and start running in direction Iller-Hängebrücke. This is where the bill goes up with the Allgäu cliché. The path leads through a mixed forest, where you can spot a squirrel here and there, past bees and extensive meadows, a farm with a large cow pasture and finally the suspension bridge over the Iller. On the other side of the bank there are tables and benches for the picnic in the countryside. The children have so much to explore on the hike and only get a little tired when they arrive at the picnic meadow. From d’Kammer we took a carving knife with us and carve sticks for the stick bread that we will make in the evening.
Refueling in the forest café with giant swing
After we have arrived back at the hiking parking lot, we go to the Waldcafé. This is just a stone’s throw away and a idyllic place to recharge your batteries on a family holiday in the Allgäu. We walk the last few meters from the parking lot and see the gigant swing from a distance. An absolute magnet for every child! We are all rocking towards the mountains in turn. Then we go to the café. In the afternoon you can enjoy the last sunbeams there and enjoy coffee and cake. There is also a small Fairtrade shop that sells local products. With the small playground in the café, the large meadow and the adjacent forest and on top of the huge swing, the children have numerous play opportunities.
Get to know life as it used to be in live and in color in the Farmers’ Museum.
Before we go back to the most beautiful sleeping place in the whole Allgäu, we take a look at the Bauernmuseum . This is also located in Illerbeuren and shows in a vivid way how life used to be. Through the reconditioned farmhouses you can march relaxed and examine the small doors, short beds and much more. In addition, there is a changing program of craftsmanship. If you take the path towards the bowling alley, you will pass animal enclosures and can look for the Swabian Big Five. Once at the ancient bowling alley, a climbing playground and a restaurant are waiting.
But now we are really exhausted and ready for the evening conclusion. With a beautiful campfire we make ourselves comfortable outside in the garden of d’Kammer and bake stick bread in the embers. If you prefer to eat outside, we can recommend the Restaurant URTYP in the neighboring village. There, a lot of emphasis is placed on high-quality products from domestic producers. You can taste it. In summer, the children can vent off steam on the platz with water games.
