No other city enchants us during the Christmas season quite like Salzburg. It’s the perfect place to slip into the festive spirit when visiting Salzburg with kids. The charm of the old town — with its winding alleys, traditional coffee houses, stately palaces and the Alpine backdrop — casts Salzburg in a truly magical light. Even more so at Christmas, when everything sparkles and glows. The streets are festively decorated, and alongside the big Christmas markets, you’ll find small, hidden ones tucked away in the narrow lanes.
Travelling from Munich by train takes no time at all, leaving you an entire day to soak up the city’s wonderful Christmas atmosphere. In this guide, we’ll show you which places you absolutely shouldn’t miss when exploring Salzburg with children during the festive season.

Favourite Spots in Salzburg with Kids
Once you arrive in Salzburg, the first stop is the Toy Museum right in the heart of the city. It’s the perfect place to start, letting kids run, play and explore. We dive into the world of toys, learn that marbles are the oldest toys in the world, and even build a wooden toy together. The museum is wonderfully designed with children in mind.
Another great option is to head straight up to the Mönchsberg lift for stunning views over the city. It’s also the perfect excuse to enjoy a cosy coffee or hot chocolate on the terrace of Restaurant M32. The restaurant sits inside the Museum of Modern Art and is directly accessible by lift. On the way back down, you walk the path into the city with a stop at the playground with a challenging climbing course, conveniently located right along the route.
Salzburg with Kids at Christmas
As soon as dusk settles, we wander through the Getreidegasse and let ourselves be carried away by the festive magic that fills Salzburg at Christmastime. Every street is lined with lush Christmas trees and glowing lights. Holiday music drifts from the shops, and the confectioneries have transformed their windows into miniature Christmas bakeries. The scent of the season is everywhere in the air.
After visiting the Christkindlmarkt, it’s time to warm up. The Haus der Natur is just the place. Here, nature is explained in the most exciting way — from life-sized dinosaurs to fascinating displays about how volcanoes form. And it’s anything but boring. Kids are encouraged to touch, try and explore at every turn.
Restaurants in Salzburg with Kids
By now we’re hungry and head to the Mexican restaurant Die Cabreras. Truly the best and most authentic Mexican cuisine far and wide — we even dream about it back home in Munich. Children are warmly welcomed and immediately handed a box of toys. We sample our way through the menu and feel as if we’ve travelled straight on to Mexico.
If you prefer to try traditional Austrian cuisine when visiting Salzburg with kids, head to the restaurant Die Weisse. For us, a Sachertorte is a must when in Salzburg. We love stopping by Hotel Sacher in the afternoon for a slice. Kids get colouring materials, and highchairs are available as well.
