Hohe Tauern is a truly beautiful national park in the Alps with a wide variety of hiking routes. If you are travelling in Carinthia with a child, the former Rollbahn offers a great family hike. You hike through the former ore mining area in the Großfragant. The trail has hardly any ascent and is therefore ideal for hiking with children.
The hiking route initially leads through the forest. It can happen that you have to climb over a tree trunk that has been knocked over by the storm or pass under one. Often there are silvery shimmering stones along the way that remember on the past of this region. For children the stones seem to be real treasures. It is wonderful to imagine with them how the former Rollbahn was used for horse-drawn railway.
The route passes water troughs. Don’t miss to feel with your hands how cold the water is going down the mountains. In between there are extra large benches where you can take a break with a wonderful view. Otherwise the path is usually too narrow to stop.
The children get big eyes when they discover the old tunnel. Even if it is only short, it is an adventure for the kids to cross the tunnel. Again and again it goes steeply down the slope, so it is absolutely advisable to hold the children by the hand. Already from a distance, one can discover the huts on the opposite mountain slope, near which there is also the Fraganter Schutzhaus. Especially beautiful for the children when the target is within sight.
Once you have reached the cow pasture, the path widens a little. With a bit of luck you will discover wild strawberries and blueberries. You can already hear the river from a distance. Shortly before you reach your destination, you cross the river over two adventurous bridges. After the Gundi bridge, keep left and you will soon reach the Fraganter Schutzhaus. The hut is very child-friendly, invites you to linger and also to spend the night. From there you can start further hiking trips for example to the family-friendly hut Eggeralm.
With a (small) child you can easily plan 2 1/2 hours for the hike.
