Worthwhile ascent to the Kesselalm with children!
The family-friendly hiking trail to the Breitenstein is conveniently located near the Schliersee in the Mangfall Mountains. Once you’ve parked the car at the hiking lot, just head straight for the signs towards Kesselalm. You’ll find a lovely shady path through the forest that’ll take you up to the first few metres of altitude. It’s a lovely walk, even in summer, despite the heat. There are always some nice little water spots for the kids to play in.
The last stretch is a free-terrain run up to the Kesselalm. The ascent (approximately two hours) has everything you could want, but it’s not suitable for strollers in our opinion. As always, we hiked with a friendly family and their kids, which was great because we got to tackle the steep climbs together. Mountaineering together is twice as much fun!
Once you get to the top, there’s a big portion of Kaiserschmarrn. It’s just the thing at the Kesselalm, a great way to cool down. There isn’t a children’s playground at the hut, but there are plenty of trees to climb nearby. The Kesselalm offers the perfect spot to take in the breathtaking scenery and enjoy the tranquil mountain atmosphere.
You can either walk further towards the summit on the relatively flat path (signposted Hubertushütte) or make your way back after an extensive visit to the alpine pasture. We decided on the second option and were back down in the valley after an hour. It took us three hours in total to hike up to Kesselalm and back.
A detour to Schliersee is definitely worth it after the hike!
