Experience the Wörthersee in Carinthia with kids!
Lake Wörthersee reminds not only our kids on the “sea”. Due to its crystal clear turquoise water there are for sure some similarities, although of course it is still a big lake. But the feeling you get by lying in the sand and looking on the water comes close to feeling you have at the beach.
Young and old like the warm temperatures of the lake in summer, the quality of the water and the magnificent mountain panorama all around.
Lake Wörthersee is not only ideal for swimming, but also for walks as well as hikes all around, culinary excursions and playground visits. We present you our favorite places around the Wörthersee.
The most beautiful bathing places
Our favorite spot for a swim with children is the lido “Strandbad Klagenfurt”. It is also the largest lido and correspondingly well attended in high season. We love the wide sandy beach, where it goes very shallow into the water which is simply wonderful especially with smaller children. On the sandy beach there are extra sun sails specially designed for families. In addition to the playgrounds near the sunbathing areas, there is also a beautiful water playground directly on the lake shore. The big slide is very popular with all older children.
Especially for all water sports enthusiasts, the Parkbad Krumpendorf is a top address. At the Seesport Wörthersee you can borrow nearly everything that water sports enthusiast love. From SUP to pedal boats to water skiing, everything is possible.
In addition they have set-up in the lake special trampolines and a water polo court. On the meadow there is also a small but very nice playground for kids.
Two other nice lidos are the Lorettobad and the Strandbad Maiernigg. They are smaller but have everything it needs. A nice meadow for sunbathing, a small playground, footbridges leading into the water, and separate children’s and non-swimmer’s pools.
In addition to the lido pools, which have a pleasant infrastructure, but for which you also pay an entrance fee, there are also a few free lake accesses, such as the one close to Schamander or in Pritschitz.
On excursion with child at lake Wörthersee
There are many things you can do on the Lake Wörthersee. A nice highlight is to rent an electric boat or pedal boat and sail across the lake. Likewise, it is also a lot of fun to rent a SUP. Of course life jackets for the children is a must have and ideally the kids can swim!
Especially when the weather is not ideal for swimming, the playgrounds at the lake invite you to an excursion. Very special is the climbing playground in Pörtschach, where even the smallest can pursue their climbing joy. Hidden away and with an equally great panorama for the parents is the small pirate boat playground in Krumpendorf. In Reifnitz there is the great swing playground, which is, however, a few meters away from the lake and thus does not offer a direct lake view. Otherwise, even on days when there is no bathing weather, the lidos are ideal for a visit because of their playgrounds, especially if you are in possession of an entry ticket anyway.
In addition, you can take a beautiful walk in the eastern bay from the lido to the Fridelsteg or further to the Schamander. Or you can set out on a hike and head towards Kreuzbergl, Pirkerkogel or Hohe Gillette. Eating with children at lake Wörthersee
You can get small snacks at the lidos (called Strandbäder). But if you want to eat without taking a swim the Italian restaurant called “Lido” is very nice with kids. They have a playground next to the terrace. They offer a good Italian cuisine and the weekly menu offers delicious seasonal specials.
Furthermore, there are several other fine restaurants where you can enjoy the lake at close range. These restaurants are especially nice it you enjoy an adults only evening of just the two of you! Among them are Lakeside in Reifnitz, Bistro Südsee in Maria Wörth or Restaurant Rosé in Velden.
