Hidden Gems and Favourite Spots for Winter Outings in and around Munich with Kids
When winter arrives in Munich with kids, the excitement grows for snow-covered rooftops, sledding on the city’s best hills, and cosy moments in cafés – ideally with a play corner. To make sure the magic of the season lasts, we’ve gathered our favourite places in Munich. Our go-to spots that families shouldn’t miss during the colder months.
Indoor Fun at Munich’s Best Play Spaces
On truly cold winter days, a visit to the playground quickly turns into a shivery affair. That’s why indoor play areas in and around Munich are especially handy, giving kids plenty of space **to play freely** even in the colder months.
One of our favourites is the Turncafé, conveniently located **right in the city centre** and easily accessible by public transport (Josephsplatz or Hohenzollernplatz).
Usually you’d head to a wildlife park in nice weather — but the Bergtierpark Blindham also has a huge indoor play area. Inside a beautifully renovated barn, children will find around 2,000 m² of everything their hearts could wish for! In addition to a **toddler area with a large sandpit** and plenty of ride-on cars, kids can explore across three levels: suspension bridges, swings, wobble paths, a flying gondola, and giant slides. And parents are taken care of too: there’s a quiet room with Alpine panorama views and reclining chairs for pure relaxation. Wonderful!
Enjoy Some Quality Time over a Delicious Slice of Cake
Child-friendly cafés with play corners in Munich are perfect for meeting up with friends. You actually get to finish a conversation, and the kids have fun discovering new toys.
These are the family-friendly cafés in Munich we love to visit with our own children:
At Café Clara, the day begins on a relaxed note. Their breakfast is delicious, and in the afternoon, the tempting cake counter draws families in for a sweet break. Don’t miss the cheesecake!
At the Vits Coffee Roastery, you’ll not only find excellent coffee but also a well-equipped play corner for the kids.

Winter Fun in and around Munich with Kids
Sledding and those very first turns on skis are easy to enjoy with kids in the ski areas close to Munich. We especially love having a cosy restaurant or café right by the lift or nearby. You’ll find a great selection here.
A real highlight for all sledding fans is the Hörnle toboggan run. The 4.5 km track has mountain huts at both ends that feel made for families, complete with play corners to keep kids entertained.
The Blomberg also promises plenty of fun on the descent. Halfway down, you can stop for a long lunch break in the hut right on the sledding route.
Another great idea is a family day trip to Lake Spitzingsee, more precisely to the Obere Firstalm. A snow-covered winter hike awaits you here – and you can top it off with an exhilarating sled ride back down.
If you’d rather stay local, Munich has some fantastic sledding hills too. In the English Garden, the Monopteros hill is especially popular. Afterwards, warm up at the Milchhäusl or Café Reitschule.
In the northern part of Luitpoldpark, a big snowy hill is waiting to be discovered. And after all the fun, Ciao Francesco at the Bamberger Haus is the perfect spot for a delicious pizza.
