If you’re exploring the Wilder Kaiser region with kids, don’t even think about leaving the bikes at home – or simply rent them on site. Around Ellmau, Going, Scheffau and Söll, you’ll find well-maintained trails, crystal-clear mountain lakes, rustic alpine huts and plenty of little adventures along the way. And the best part? E-bikes are available almost everywhere – even in kid-friendly sizes.

Our favourite route begins right in the village centre of Scheffau – with fully charged batteries, snug helmets, a backpack full of snacks and lots of excitement. Just enter “Hintersteiner See” as your destination and you’ll be guided straight to the cycling route. After just a few minutes, you’ll leave the village behind and dive straight into the mountains.

First Leg: Hintersteiner See

One important tip: even with e-bikes, kids need to learn how to use the gears properly. On both climbs and descents, it helps to know how the gears and motor work together. That’s why it’s great that the route starts off nice and flat, giving everyone time to get used to things. After a short downhill stretch and a few climbs (which feel surprisingly easy thanks to the e-boost), it suddenly appears: Hintersteiner See – so clear you can spot schools of fish from the shore. Surrounded by dense forest and steep slopes, it has a magical, hidden-lake kind of vibe. The perfect place for a proper break.
Dip your feet into the cold water, have a snack, take a deep breath. If you’re feeling brave, jump in for a swim (note: swimming is only allowed in the front section!). The water’s drinking quality – so yes, refreshment in its purest form.

Destination: Hinterschießlingalm

The biking tour at the Wilder Kaiser continues, and after a relaxed 20 minutes, you’ll reach the Hinterschießlingalm – a peaceful spot at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser, loved by locals, hikers and bikers alike.
You can unwind on the spacious terrace, meet real mountain enthusiasts and enjoy the view down into the valley. A favourite corner: the covered seating area just to the left of the house. For kids, there are rabbits, alpacas and a fountain to splash around in – perfect for letting go and having fun.

The menu is full of local flavour: Angus ham and salami from their own farm, homemade spreads, fresh farmhouse bread and cake just like grandma used to make. The daily specials keep things interesting – everything simple, regional and delicious.

The final stretch back to the village centre of Scheffau takes only a few more minutes.
