A charming city hotel in the middle of Vienna for families!
Tucked away in a charming 19th-century townhouse spread over five floors, the Boutique Hotel Altstadt Vienna feels like a place full of character and warmth. Owner Otto Wiesenthal, a passionate art lover, has filled the walls with contemporary pieces from his own collection, making each room unique. There’s a genuine sense of hospitality throughout, turning the Altstadt Vienna into a special place for families. Whether you’re big or small, you’ll feel right at home here. From the location to the rooms, breakfast, and child-friendliness—everything just clicks.
Location
The hotel sits in Vienna’s creative district, where small boutiques and charming local shops shape the neighborhood vibe. This is where you feel the real, authentic side of the city. It’s a lovely area for families, with plenty of playgrounds, ice cream shops, and kids’ stores. The MuseumsQuartier is just a five-minute walk away, home to the Zoom Children’s Museum, a kid-friendly jungle café, and a children’s theatre.
Rooms
Almost every year, new rooms are created at Altstadt Vienna – designed by local artists, fashion designers or architects, each bringing their own creative signature and a unique story to life within the space.
Brand new additions include two boldly coloured rooms by Viennese designer Arthur Arbesser, who has infused the interiors with his very own “Viennese–Milanese melange” – a thoughtful mix of colour, pattern and cosy details.
Especially well suited for families – and just as inspiring – is the Grete Wiesenthal Suite #79, named after Otto’s great cousin, a renowned dancer from the turn of the century. With two separate bedrooms, a welcoming living area and a bathroom spacious enough to avoid any morning traffic jams, it is the largest suite in the house – and particularly ideal for longer stays.
The two suites Sari’s Home #84 and Harry K Room #85 are also perfect for extended visits, offering generous living areas as well as a fully equipped kitchenette.
Families looking for a more budget-friendly option – especially those planning to spend most of their time exploring Vienna with their kids – will appreciate the new Family Room XL. The Medium Double Room #56 features a connecting door to our Orient Express Bunk Bed Room #55, making it ideal for families with up to two children.
Travelling with older kids who enjoy a bit more privacy? Then the United Nations Suite is sure to become their favourite. The two Suites #73 and #74 can be connected via a shared entrance, each comes with its own bathroom, and the living areas offer plenty of space for the whole family.
Families also have the option to book rooms next to each other – simply leave a note when making your reservation.
In the end, every guest is spoiled for choice – between art, design and that unmistakable feeling of being truly at home.
Kids
Altstadt Vienna is different from classic family hotels – it is much more than that. It is a place of ease and comfort in the heart of Vienna, welcoming guests of all generations. Children of every age are truly welcome, and great care is taken to ensure that everyone feels considered when planning a stay. High chairs are available for little ones at breakfast, while older children will find books and games to enjoy. This thoughtful approach makes every visit a relaxed and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
Breakfast
Every morning, the Red Salon transforms into a true breakfast feast. The buffet offers warm and sweet dishes alongside sustainable, regional specialities – all prepared with care and full of flavour. In addition, guests may order egg dishes and beverages à la carte.
But the Red Salon is not just a place for breakfast. In the afternoon, it invites you to linger over the finest homemade cakes, carefully curated tea blends or fragrant coffee – all in an atmosphere even cosier than a traditional Viennese coffee house.
The Unique
One of Altstadt Vienna’s most special features is its rooftop terrace – a much-loved retreat above the rooftops of Vienna from May to September. It is a place to breathe, dream and spend time together.
While the children slowly slip into bed after an eventful day, parents may enjoy a glass of wine at the bar or a refreshing cocktail at sunset. And sometimes, when everyone is allowed to stay up just a little longer, the terrace itself becomes the perfect bedtime treat for the whole family.
All the more reason to love Altstadt Vienna not only as a design hotel, but as a true home away from home.
