An Honest Guide to a Family Holiday in Tyrol

Share with family and friends

How do you want your days in the mountains to feel? Full of action. Calm and close to nature. Packed with mountain playgrounds. Or centered around really good food. When we talk about a family holiday in Tyrol, that’s the real question. Not how many kilometers of slopes a region offers. Not how dramatic the summit looks. But whether the place truly fits your family.
Tyrol can be many things. A ski area with excellent infrastructure for families. Wide-open landscapes where nature takes the lead. Thoughtfully designed adventure spaces for curious kids. Or a quiet retreat serving the best Kaiserschmarrn you’ve ever tasted.
Over the past few years, we’ve explored many parts of Tyrol with our children. These are the regions that truly won us over. Each for a different reason. Each with its own distinct character.

Kaiserwinkl: Winter That Feels Manageable Yet Full of Variety

In the Kaiserwinkl—just one hour from Munich—we experienced for the first time that a winter holiday with kids doesn’t automatically have to feel exhausting. Everything is close together. Hochkössen for skiing. Snow tubing and cross-country trails in Kössen. Winter hiking paths toward Walchsee. A sledding trip up to a mountain hut.
You don’t lose time moving between parking lots, lifts, and accommodation. And that’s what truly makes the difference. Kids ease into their ski day without stress, and parents don’t have to constantly coordinate logistics.

Lechtal: Nature Without the Staging

The Lechtal feels more expansive than many other regions. Less condensed. Less curated. Instead, it offers more landscape, more space to breathe. If you stop along the banks of the Lech River, you’ll encounter the river’s only remaining wild stretch. We visited in summer and, despite the rain, took home some of our most memorable nature experiences—like a hike with huskies through the valley.

Hexenwasser Söll: Learning Outdoors Without It Feeling Like a Lesson

If there’s one place our kids still talk about, it’s Hexenwasser in Söll am Wilden Kaiser, which we visited during our family holiday in Tyrol. Hexenwasser is a great example of how thoughtfully Tyrol approaches nature-based experiences. Flowing water channels, barefoot trails, and interactive stations designed to spark curiosity.
Kids begin to understand connections and natural processes without it ever feeling instructional. Along the way, they absorb plenty of knowledge about plants and the natural world—and hands-on exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged.

East Tyrol: Space as a Luxury

East Tyrol was one of our quieter discoveries. Up in the mountains, your view stretches all the way to the Großglockner. There’s a sense of space here. Space for conversations while hiking. For longer breaks. For days that aren’t built around attractions, but around landscape.
Down in the valley, you can hike through the Galitzenklamm gorge or visit the beautiful Vitalpinum wellness and discovery garden. If your idea of a family holiday in Tyrol leans less toward packed schedules and more toward time in nature, it’s well worth looking east.

Family Holiday in Tyrol: A Mountain Hut Stay with a Stargazing Walk

Boscheben, perched above Innsbruck, isn’t your typical alpine hut stop. It’s a place where you can stay overnight—and that alone changes the entire feel of a family holiday.
From the top station of the Patscherkofel cable car, the Zirbenweg trail leads gently up to the hut, an easy and scenic walk even with kids. Once you arrive, everything slows down. A shared dinner. Sunset over the Inn Valley. A short walk beneath the stars, where the hut host Clara points out constellations in the night sky. The children fall asleep in the dormitory and, for the first time, notice how different the mountains sound at night.
The next morning begins with breakfast overlooking the valley, before heading back down—or continuing on toward the summit. No entertainment program, no packed schedule. Just mountains, closeness, and that quiet sense of having truly been up there.
