TRAVEL INFORMATION: GERMAN CHILDREN’S PASSPORT ABOLISHED

What families have to consider now when preparing for their holidays!

Some countries have already not accepted the German children’s passport as a valid identity document in the past. So there were often unpleasant surprises on the way to vacation. But that’s not all, the children’s passport was only valid for one year and had to be renewed annually. Thus, the new passport for children saves you some administrative procedures.

From the 1st January 2024, children’s passports may no longer be reissued, extended or updated.

For travel outside the EU, children now need an electronic passport, which offers advantages, but is also associated with higher costs. Inform yourself in good time before your travels about the entry requirements in the destination country, so that the journey also works smoothly. We usually use the Website of the Federal Foreign Office, where details on entry and the required documents for all countries are presented very clearly and comprehensibly.

IIn a short summary of what the new children’s passport is all about.

From now on, parents must apply for a passport with a chip for their children as soon as they go abroad outside the EU. This electronic passport offers, among other things, worldwide validity and, due to its longer validity, provides fewer administrative procedures for families. Basically, the new passport for children has a validity period of 6 years. However, this validity is subject to one condition: a clear identification in the photo of the child must be possible. If the appearance of the child changes, a new passport must be applied for. This formulation is kept somewhat vague and, according to our experience, can be judged by the immigration authority of the respective country.
