History You Can Touch: The New Tramhuis

A small building with a big story. The Tramhuis was built in 1914 as a glass and steel tram shelter. It survived the bombing in 1940, moved locations several times, later became a night café and even a kebab shop, and has now returned beautifully restored.

Since February 14 it has reopened as the world’s first kiosk for city walks. Yes, really. Nothing like it exists anywhere else. The Tramhuis is a nonprofit initiative that aims to inspire people to rediscover Rotterdam step by step.

The idea is as simple as it is brilliant. Step inside, choose a route between 3 and 6 km and explore Rotterdam on foot. You can follow the route independently with the Podwalk app or the classic walk booklet. On weekends, professional guides also lead tours through the city.

Especially lovely for families is the dedicated family route where children become the guides and show the adults their Rotterdam.

Website: www.tramhuis.nl | Tickets: from €4.99 | Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday 10:00–16:00 | Address: Hermesplantsoen 3, 3012 AA Rotterdam, Netherlands

Italian Soul Food: Panzerò

Not a classic Italian restaurant. And definitely not about pizza. At Panzerò everything revolves around Apulian street food. More precisely around panzerotti and puccia, golden baked or fried dough pockets that are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and filled with honest ingredients straight from Puglia.

The dough is prepared with sourdough starter, completely vegan and has been perfected over months. You can taste the difference. This is not about fast food, but about true craftsmanship.

The small and charming spot on Botersloot street is perfect for an easy family meal after exploring the city. It is one of those places where you plan to stop for a quick bite and end up staying much longer.

Website: www.panzero.nl | Opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11:00–21:30, Friday and Saturday 11:00–22:00, Sunday 12:00–21:00 | Address: Botersloot 50A, 3011 HH Rotterdam, Netherlands

Art That Connects: Fenix

Fenix is Rotterdam’s cultural icon. Modern, bold and deeply moving. Inside the building, which many people say looks like a flying teacup, everything revolves around migration. The story unfolds through art, personal narratives and large scale installations. It is about departure and arrival, about identity, longing and the feeling of home. It sounds big. And it is. Yet Fenix feels surprisingly personal and accessible.

One of the most powerful experiences is the walk through suitcase labyrinth, which draws visitors into real life stories.

The museum is housed in a historic harbor warehouse from 1923. The sweeping Tornado staircase leads up to a viewing platform high above the roof. The climb alone is an experience and the view across the harbor is a true highlight.

Website: www.fenix.nl | Tickets: Adults €15.00, children free | Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00, closed on Monday | Address: Paul Nijghkade 5, 3072 AN Rotterdam, Netherlands

Wonder Guaranteed: Natural History Museum Rotterdam

Fossils, skeletons, taxidermy animals and the famous Domino Sparrow. At first it may sound like a rather classic museum experience. But it is anything but that. The Natural History Museum Rotterdam explores the fascinating side of nature and shows just how much biodiversity exists even in the middle of a big city. Birds, mammals, fish, insects, shells and plants reveal how diverse our world truly is.

One of the most intriguing highlights is the permanent exhibition “Dead Animal Tales”, which tells the remarkable stories of well known animals.

Good to know: every first Wednesday of the month admission is free in the afternoon. And with the Rotterdam City Card you also receive 25 percent off the regular ticket price.

Website: www.hetnatuurhistorisch.nl | Tickets: Adults €13.50, children from 4 years €7.50 (25% discount with the Rotterdam City Card) | Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00 | Address: Westzeedijk 345, 3015 AA Rotterdam, Netherlands

And last but not least, a culinary insider tip: If you’re in the mood for a relaxed meal in a stylish setting after exploring the city, make sure to stop by La Petite Soeur. With its French bistro-style cuisine, thoughtful design, and excellent coffee, even a quick lunch here feels like a mini getaway – kids included.

If you love great architecture, appreciate design that is not only beautiful but also thoughtfully created, and are looking for a city where kids can naturally be part of the experience, then Rotterdam is exactly your kind of place.

Nothing here feels overstaged. The city is stylish without showing off. Creative without being loud. And family friendly around every corner. It is exactly this mix that makes Rotterdam feel so special.

What stays with you after a trip to Rotterdam with kids? Plenty of favorite moments and the feeling that city trips with children can actually feel easy when the vibe is right. We will definitely be back.
