Family winter holidays have long been about more than ski lessons at nine and fries at noon. And winter with kids, for us, isn’t about clocking up as many piste kilometres as possible or going higher, faster, further. It’s about that special feeling: starting the ski day as calmly as possible, even if the second glove has mysteriously disappeared, smooth turns in the snow, hot chocolate breaks in the sunshine and that deeply satisfying, happy tiredness in the evening.
For 2026, we’ve chosen our personal top five family ski resorts that capture exactly this spirit. Manageable in size, genuinely family-friendly, warm and welcoming – each one special in its own way.
1. Gitschberg Jochtal: dolce vita in the snow
Gitschberg Jochtal is the ski area that sits right at the top of our list of the best family ski resorts. Two sun-drenched mountains, wide pistes, short distances and that unmistakable South Tyrolean feeling of warmth and enjoyment. For families, this area is a real gift: the ski schools are excellent, the practice areas are thoughtfully designed, and the mountain huts are places where even kids are happy to linger.
What we especially love: the altitude ensures reliable snow conditions without the area feeling too high-alpine or demanding. On top of that, prices are refreshingly fair – and children under 8 ski for free.

Kühtai: a top family ski resort at 2,020 metres – calm and crowd-free
Kühtai sits high in the mountains yet remains wonderfully compact. You step out of your accommodation and are almost instantly on the slopes – a real gift for families. No long walks, no stress, no constant packing and unpacking. The pistes are varied but never overwhelming. What we especially love is how peaceful Kühtai has remained despite its altitude. There’s no party strip, no loud après-ski stages – just crisp mountain air and slopes where you can comfortably let the kids ski on their own.

Schladming-Dachstein: a winter playground for families who love variety
Schladming-Dachstein is the opposite of one-dimensional. Winter holidays with kids work here even when not everyone wants the same thing. Skiing in the morning, fun slopes in the afternoon. Thanks to the 4 Mountains Ski Link, you can glide from one local peak to the next, ensuring plenty of variety across 222 kilometres of slopes – boredom simply isn’t an option. For us, Schladming-Dachstein isn’t just one of the best family ski regions – it’s also a place that has genuinely captured our hearts.

Golm: a hidden gem among the best family ski resorts
Golm in the Montafon region is exactly what we mean when we talk about a family hidden gem. Kids love the adventure runs, especially the Witch’s Forest, and the clear, easy-to-navigate layout of the ski area. Parents appreciate the short distances and the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. What makes Golm particularly special is that it never feels overcrowded – even during school holidays, everything stays pleasantly calm.
