Our accommodation tip for Bad Ischl with children

The Hotel Goldener Ochs is the address in Bad Ischl, or rather in the whole Salzkammergut for family vacations. Full of stories and traditions is the family-run house. When Verena Schweiger took over the 4-star hotel from her parents in 2018, fresh momentum was allowed to move into the house. Strong, harmonious colors run like a red thread through the house, even into the beautiful spa area. Her latest work is the Traunvilla with a direct river view.

In the summer, the garden and the terrace on the Traun River beckon, where you can really enjoy the summer freshness while having dinner. Several playgrounds can be reached after only a few minutes walk. The Ochsen can also score with a play corner and many toys. Even in the bar there are some and on top the kids are mixed extra non-alcoholic drinks. Every day, the kids are allowed to take over the pool for an hour and splash around to their heart’s content. This way, relaxation on vacation in the mountains succeeds one hundred percent. Click here for our favorite accommodation in Bad Ischl!

Excursion destinations for families in Bad Ischl and Salzkammergut with children

Whizzing down the mountain with the Abersee summer toboggan run

With a view of Lake Wolfgang and fresh mountain air in your face, the Salzkammergut with kids summer toboggan run takes you down into the valley just a few kilometers from Bad Ischl. First, however, the lift takes you to the top of the mountain. You have to take the bobsleds with you. Smaller children share a bob with a parent. Once you reach the top, you’re spoiled for choice as to which of the two slides you want to go down first. They both lead across meadows, forests and one or the other tunnel. It’s a lot of fun! Hike with children in the Salzkammergut on the local mountain Katrin of Bad Ischl.

After a 15-minute ride on the historic cable car, you reach the nature reserve at 1,400 meters above sea level. Numerous hiking trails start from here, which can be adapted according to the children’s ability and willingness to hike. Those who choose the 2-hour 7-lake view hike can enjoy a unique mountain panorama. On the one-hour round trip “Rosen- und Feuerkögerl” (Rose and Fire Kögerl), you can take a leisurely walk to the “Trauntalblick” viewing platform and then return to the mountain station via the natural, wildly romantic path. One thing no one should miss, however, is a stop at the Katrin Almhütte.

In the footsteps of Sissi and Franz at the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl

Emperor Franz and Empress Sissi were the biggest fans of Bad Ischl. They spent their summer retreat – as the city escape of the nobility was called in those days during the summer months – with their family in their imperial villa in the middle of the city, in keeping with their status. The descendants of the two still live in the imperial villa today and also make it accessible to visitors with exciting guided tours. Immersing yourself in the way of life of that time with its customs and traditions is also fun for children in the Kaiservilla.  Afterwards, you can take an extensive tour of the Imperial Park and visit the Marble Castle.
