Fast-paced fun: seven kilometres downhill

Tobogganing on Hochwurzen with children in Schladming is one of those winter experiences families won’t forget. The run stretches a full seven kilometres downhill – the same route that turns into a Mountain Go-Kart track in summer. Along the way, several alpine huts invite you to stop for a break. You don’t need to bring your own toboggan either: sturdy wooden sledges can be rented at the valley station for €9. And yes – the run is also open at night.
If you already have a gondola pass for the day, you can ride up to Hochwurzen free of charge and head straight into the fun on runners. Otherwise, single-ride tickets are available.
Safety first: wherever you go tobogganing, helmets are a must. Shoes with good grip are highly recommended, and ski goggles make it much more comfortable – especially if you’d prefer to arrive at the bottom with good visibility and minimal snow in your face.
Shortly after setting off, you’ll spot the first cosy hut along the way: Hochwurzenalm comes into view. We’d highly recommend stopping here right away – the hut isn’t just charming, the food and sunny terrace are well worth it, too. A definite highlight for kids: the goats, who love poking their heads out of the stable and are always happy to be gently petted.
The descent is pure family fun
After refuelling, it’s back onto the sled and full speed ahead down into the valley. One of the best parts about tobogganing on Hochwurzen with children in Schladming is a good old-fashioned family race. A few handy sledging tips: on straight sections, lean back low to the sled to keep your line steady – and sneak in a little core workout while you’re at it. In the curves, sit up again and shift your weight slightly; on steeper turns, use your feet to help steer. If there’s an accident ahead or you realise a turn isn’t going to work, simply pull up the front of the sled. It might not be a graceful landing, but it’s still better than flying off the track or ending up in a pile-up.
As mentioned earlier, you can also go tobogganing on Hochwurzen in the evening. The run is beautifully lit, and you can even pre-order ribs for the whole family at Hochwurzenalm beforehand. It’s guaranteed to turn the evening into a real adventure for everyone.
