Families exploring the south of France will find one of the country’s most pristine and stunning landscapes in the Ardèche region. A canoe trip down its namesake river is much more than just paddling – it’s a unique immersion into nature.

Your canoe gently pushes off from the riverbank, leaving the shore behind as you glide into a spectacular gorge landscape. The Ardèche reveals itself in all its glory: crystal-clear waters, towering limestone cliffs, and the magnificent Pont d’Arc – an iconic natural rock arch majestically spanning the river.

Mini Adventure: Family-friendly 6 or 13 km tours

Depending on water levels and how adventurous you’re feeling, you can choose between two family-friendly routes: 6 or 13 kilometers of pure nature. For our journey to Pont d’Arc, we opted for the shorter route – ideal for beginners and younger explorers.

Your adventure starts at Aigue Vive, a canoe rental place where you’ll receive all necessary equipment: life jackets, paddles, and even wetsuits if the weather is cooler. Then, you’re off on six kilometers filled with natural wonders, exciting rapids, and small caves waiting to be discovered.

Heartfelt Guidance: Meet Your Guide, Sabine

Sabine proves time and again that whitewater adventures are perfectly suited to families. As a former canoeing world champion and mother of three, she has a natural flair for guiding adventurers of all ages.

Her calm demeanor, extensive experience, and cheerful attitude ensure you feel safe without missing out on any fun. An added bonus: Sabine speaks fluent German, which is especially helpful when clear instructions are crucial at tricky rapids.

Pont d’Arc: Nature’s Wonder and Adventure Playground

After about five kilometers, you’ll arrive at the spectacular Pont d’Arc. Canoeing right beneath this natural arch is truly an unforgettable moment.

If you wish, you can take a short break here. While you enjoy the view, the kids will love exploring small caves (they might even spot a bat!), climbing around the rocks, or splashing along the riverbank. After around two hours, you’ll easily reach the endpoint, where the friendly team from Aigue Vive picks you up and brings you back to the starting point.

Practical tips for your Ardèche canoe adventure

  • Equipment provided: Life jackets, paddles, and wetsuits if needed
  • Must-bring: Sturdy, waterproof shoes (flip-flops are unsuitable)
  • Extra warmth: Pack a rain jacket or fleece for afterward – it can feel cool when the sun disappears behind the cliffs.
  • Recommended age: From age 7 with parental supervision; younger children only with a guide.

Extra Tip: If you’re looking for even more adventure or need a rainy-day plan, the fascinating Grotte Chauvet 2 is just around the corner!
