Where South Tyrol’s Mountains Become the Most Magical Winter Backdrop
Hiking in South Tyrol with children to the Kaserill Alm is a highlight for families in every season. In terms of scenery, the view of the majestic Geisler peaks together with the idyllic nature next to the hiking trail is really hard to beat. Once at the top, the pretty little alpine alm is already waiting with everything a family heart desires.
In summer, the children’s playground and the petting zoo keep the little adventurers on their toes, while on the sun terrace homemade delicacies are served. In winter, the toboggan route starts right in front of the alpine pash back into the valley, which is a lot of fun for the whole family.
For us, the hike to Kaserill Alm has now become a tradition as soon as we are nearby. We prefer to take friends or even grandparents with us. Because the way there is really feasible for everyone.
The tour begins at the Zanseralm parking. From there, follow trail no. 33 towards the Kaserill Alm. The path leads gently uphill through the conifer forest. In winter, the snow-dusted trees look like they’ve been lifted straight from a magical winter postcard.
Soon the landscape opens up, and the little mountain stream becomes a highlight—especially in summer—when hiking in South Tyrol with kids. Cool your feet, toss pebbles, take a break. The walking time from Zans to the Kaserill Alm is listed as 1 hour for just under 2 kilometres. With kids and all our winter gear, it took us a little longer.
At the top, hikers are welcomed by the charming Kaserill Alm with its own cheese dairy, traditional South Tyrolean dishes made from natural regional products, and a truly excellent Kaiserschmarrn. Indoors, the tiled stove creates a wonderfully cosy atmosphere—perfect for warming up in winter. But as soon as the first rays of sun appear, everyone heads out to the terrace, where breathtaking mountain views await.
Extra fun in winter: combine your family hike in South Tyrol with an exhilarating sled ride
For the way back to the car park, winter visitors can opt for a speedy sled ride directly from the hut. Sleds can be rented on-site for a small fee (advance reservations are recommended on holidays), and there’s a designated drop-off point by the car park.
Good to know: The sledding track is well prepared and wide enough to safely pass walkers. On the ascent, however, keep in mind that parts of the sled run are used as the hiking trail—so be aware of sledders coming towards you. With a bit of attentiveness, nothing stands in the way of a perfect family hike in South Tyrol to the Kaserill Alm.
