Lebenberg Castle in Tscherms on the Marlinger Waalweg is a great excursion tip in South Tyrol with children. It is a place that combines past and present in a fascinating way, as it is still inhabited after hundreds of years – a rarity.

During a half-hour guided tour, which was led by an extremely charming older gentleman, who we would like to mention because his stories really inspired us, you can get to know the inner workings of the castle.

You will be surprised to realise how sophisticated people were at the time, how ingenious they were when making furniture and which phrases we still use today.

Lana connects: Hiking and culture

You can reach Lebenberg Castle by walking from the Hotel Schwarzschmied through Lana and then following the signs for the “Marlinger Waalweg” trail. The first ascent is challenging, but once you have mastered it, the path is completely flat and rewards you with a unique view of the South Tyrolean mountains. On the way, you will pass the Buschenschank Weingut Haidenhof, from where you can already recognise the castle and stop for a little refreshment beforehand.

All in all, you should allow a good hour for the outward journey. Travelling by car is also possible, especially if you are perhaps travelling with your grandparents. However, caution is advised as many navigation systems and Google Maps show the Waalweg as a normal road, which it is not. Make sure you choose the route via Tscherms.

Lebenberg Castle can also be found on the brand new discovery map for families in the region. Here you can discover even more hidden treasures that will let you delve into the depths of the region.
