A Nature Paradise of Canoeing, Prehistory and Design Cabanes

In the mornings, when mist still hangs in the gorges and the Ardèche murmurs quietly beneath the rocks, you sit on your cabane terrace with a coffee, glass front open, forest right in front of you, and think: “This is every bit as good as a holiday by the sea.” Rives d’Arc is the riverside Rivages of the Collection, the only one without a sea view, and yet, perhaps because of that, possibly the most exciting of the five. Twelve hectares of natural parkland right on the Ardèche, at the entrance to the famous Gorges, in a landscape that holds treasures millions of years in the making.
Location
The Gorges de l’Ardèche are among the most spectacular natural landscapes in France, and hardly anyone north of the Alps truly knows it. The river winds for 30 kilometres through white limestone canyons, passes beneath the Pont d’Arc, a natural rock arch through which the water flows, and eventually joins the Rhône. Rives d’Arc sits right on the edge of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, opening up the entire natural heritage of the region: gorge, river and prehistory.
The drive from German-speaking countries takes around six to eight hours. Munich is roughly 700 km away, Stuttgart just under 500 km. If you’d rather not drive straight through, a stop in Lyon makes perfect sense. It’s roughly halfway and, as the culinary capital of France, more than deserves a detour of its own.
Accommodation
The Cabanes d’Arc are architecturally the boldest thing Collection Rivages builds: tucked deep into the vegetation, with floor-to-ceiling glass that frames the forest like a living painting. Two or three bedrooms, a generous terrace, warm materials throughout. You move in and within an hour you notice how the stillness of nature starts to still you too. The Folies and Tiny Houses are the more adventurous alternative: compact, sustainably built, with a particularly close connection to the natural surroundings. If you can, book a cabane with a view into the vegetation. The difference in the morning is simply wonderful.
Kids
The river is the main event. Canoe and kayak tours on the Ardèche are suitable from around age six, with guided tours in various lengths and the Pont d’Arc, the natural rock arch spanning the river, as the highlight along the way. Among the guides is Sabine from Aigue Vive, a former kayak world champion and mother of three who knows the Ardèche inside out and understands exactly what works for families on the water.
Within the Rivages itself: a heated pool with a children’s section, multi-sport areas, and right next door the Jardins de l’Ibie, a seven-hectare agroforestry park with fruit trees and a kitchen garden where children can discover where apples actually come from. The Kids Club and Teens Club in July and August takes a nature-based approach, taking children to where the real learning happens: outside.
Food & Drink
Restaurant Avalon cooks the terroir of the Ardèche: chestnuts, goat’s cheese, charcuterie from local farms, hearty dishes without any pretension. The Rivière Club by the pool is the lighter option: snacks, bar, apéro. For an evening without the kids: Balazuc, 30 minutes away, is one of the most beautiful villages in France, with small restaurants serving regional cuisine at a genuinely high level.
Day Trips
The Grotte Chauvet 2, the life-size replica of the Chauvet Cave with its 36,000-year-old animal drawings, is a family experience that leaves children and adults alike completely speechless. Book tickets well in advance.
Antraïgues-sur-Volane makes for a beautiful contrast: a small mountain village nestled into the hillsides of the Ardèche, its lanes carrying an almost timeless quality. This was the home of chansonnier Jean Ferrat, and even today you can feel that quiet, artistic atmosphere between stone houses, small squares and sweeping views across the valley. Perfect for a late afternoon with no plan, wandering the streets, tasting local cheese and simply going wherever the mood takes you.
