Winter mode on: tobogganing under the stars on Hochwurzen
Sponsored
For us, a winter holiday in Schladming doesnโt start on the slopes, but on the very first evening with night tobogganing on Hochwurzen. Itโs the perfect way to ease into the holiday โ effortless, great fun and just right for slipping straight into winter mode with friends and family.
Why night tobogganing on Hochwurzen is always a good idea
Whether itโs to settle in, as a change of pace after a ski day, or simply because youโre in the mood for a special winter experience โ getting outside, moving your body and breathing in the crisp winter air does everyone good. And few things feel more wintry than racing downhill under a star-filled sky, the cold air rushing past your face.
Hochwurzen sits above Schladming and is exceptionally well organised. Parking is right at the valley station, tickets are purchased on site, and rental sledges can simply be taken into the gondola with you. Everything works smoothly and without detours โ a real advantage, especially on arrival day.
How night tobogganing works
The toboggan run on Hochwurzen is around seven kilometres long and open between 7:00 pm and 11:00 pm. The entire route is floodlit, so headlamps arenโt necessary. Wearing a helmet is still highly recommended, especially when tobogganing with children.
With younger children, up to around the age of ten, it makes sense for them to ride on the same sledge with an adult. The track itself is very well groomed and clearly laid out, so thereโs no need to worry about poor visibility or tricky corners.
Depending on your pace, the descent takes between 40 minutes and an hour, including short stops. Those taking it easy will naturally need a little longer, while more confident riders will reach the valley sooner.
One important tip for families: timing matters. Try to plan your night tobogganing for earlier in the evening, as the run can get busier later on. Earlier descents are more relaxed and generally more enjoyable.
Stopping for a bite at Hochwurzen Alm
A key part of the evening for us is a stop at Hochwurzen Alm. Itโs located right at the start of the toboggan run, practically in the very first bend. The hut is small, charming and very popular โ which is exactly why itโs a good idea to reserve a table in advance.
The food is genuinely good and the atmosphere wonderfully cosy. Itโs the perfect moment to sit together, enjoy something warm to drink and look forward to the ride down into the valley.
More than just night tobogganing
Anyone returning to Hochwurzen during the day on skis will quickly discover that thereโs more to this mountain than night tobogganing alone. A fun slope and a speed track add extra excitement, especially for older children and teenagers.
Still, when it comes to our favourite evening activity in Schladming-Dachstein, night tobogganing remains unbeaten. And if youโd like to turn it into a full winter holiday, youโll find more of our favourite skiing spots around Schladming here.
