Dive straight into the mountain world with the cable car

The journey starts at the valley station in Ebensee. Once you step in, you truly take off — quite literally. The Traunsee sparkles below, the forests stretch out beneath you, and up ahead awaits a plateau with wide meadows, fields of mountain pines and rock formations full of character. The few minutes of the ride are all it takes to switch your mind into mountain mode.

A meaningful destination: The European Cross

The hike to the European Cross is a classic at Feuerkogel. The path is pleasantly flat, winding over soft alpine meadows and through dense mountain pine forests. Along the way, stunning views open up to the lakes of the region, especially the deep blue Lake Traunsee. On the other side, bizarre rock formations rise into the sky. Look closely and you’ll spot the via ferrata where daring climbers make their way upwards.
After about 45 minutes, you reach the European Cross, which is special not only geographically but also symbolically. Embedded in its foundation are real stones from every member state of the European Union. The lower stones are within reach — a detail that kids especially love. Europe becomes something tangible, quite literally.

For children, the summit guestbook is the real star. Signing their name, closing the book with a big grin, and feeling like a true summit conqueror.

Time for a break: mountain huts to refuel

Even the bravest little tummies start to rumble eventually. Several mountain huts offer the perfect spots to recharge. The terrace at the Berggasthof Edelweiß is especially lovely. The kitchen serves hearty, regional dishes that truly satisfy — from classic roast chicken salad to warm daily specials. If you’re just looking for a quick break, the Kranabethhütte near the cable car station is also a great choice for soup, strudel or a quick ice cream.

Between mountain pines and labyrinths

If you’re not ready to stop yet, stay up on the high plateau. More discovery trails await. The so-called Latschen Labyrinth is a family-friendly circular route that lives up to its name. Among the twisted mountain pines, you’ll find little adventures, hiding spots and paths that lead in every direction.
For active families who aren’t afraid of heights, the Alberfeldkogel via ferrata is a great option. This route is one of the region’s favourites and rewards climbers with a spectacular view straight down from the summit cross. If you prefer two wheels, the natural downhill track “Die Dunkelschwarze” offers the perfect challenge. It’s recommended only for mountain bike experts — definitely not for beginners! Please note: riding is only allowed with full protective gear and a full-face helmet.

Fans of air sports also have their stage at Feuerkogel. Paragliders and hang gliders take advantage of the favourable thermals for spectacular launches over Lake Traunsee.

Hiking tip for all generations

Feuerkogel is a hiking destination that brings people together — whether you’re with school-aged kids, grandparents, or three generations all in one place. The trails are easy to walk, and the views reward everyone, no matter if you’re using hiking poles or carrying a child’s backpack.
