No parent mode, no to-do list, just breathing space. That’s exactly what we treated ourselves to: two days at the Amrai Suites in Montafon.
We arrived in Montafon on a crisp autumn Friday evening. The mountains were already wrapped in darkness, with only the architectural silhouette of the Amrai Suites outlined against the sky. So we saved the surroundings for the next morning and dedicated this first evening entirely to the inner beauty of the Amrai house. As soon as we stepped inside, our eyes were drawn to the copper bar, with a crackling fireplace glowing warmly behind it. With a welcome drink in hand, we sank into soft armchairs while quiet voices drifted through the room. And just like that, we felt ourselves arrive — at a little retreat where being parents could simply take a break.
The next morning, we finally took in the view outside. The Amrai Suites sit nestled in the heart of Schruns, surrounded by the Montafon mountains — close enough to village life, yet with the quiet feeling of retreat. From the balcony, your gaze drifts over rooftops, meadows and peaks, across a valley slowly waking in the morning light.
Where Design Meets Craftsmanship
The Amrai Suites are an architectural highlight in Montafon. The house blends traditional craftsmanship from Vorarlberg with a contemporary aesthetic.
Named after the legendary figure “Amrai” — a woman from Montafon known for courage, strength and artisanal skill — the building carries these very qualities: tradition, sincerity and thoughtful details that radiate warmth.
Copper, wood and stone run as a guiding theme throughout the entire house. These materials honour the mining history of the valley, while everything also feels refreshingly modern. And it’s clear that sustainability here is more than a buzzword. Many of the furnishings were crafted locally, the building was designed for energy efficiency, and the kitchen works closely with regional producers.
Living & Unwinding
In the suites and apartments, you immediately feel that everything is in balance. Nothing distracts, nothing demands attention. Just a quiet interplay of wood, light and warmth that gently allows your body to slow down. A highlight: the private sauna, the steam bath integrated into the shower, and the balcony with mountain views.
There are a total of 45 suites and apartments, each with its own personality. Some are open and spacious, others more compact and wonderfully cosy. What unites them is the unmistakable design signature: natural materials, soft tones, high-quality furnishings and an intuitive sense of aesthetics that never feels loud—just beautifully harmonious.
The kitchen is fully equipped and disappears elegantly behind wooden panels when not in use. So even in a holiday apartment, you never feel reminded of everyday life. In the evenings, we sat in front of the small in-room fireplace with a glass of wine. No schedule, no distractions—just warmth, quiet crackling and that moment where everything suddenly feels effortlessly light.
Pleasure Without Overwhelm
Dining at the Amrai Suites means listening to the region. The kitchen draws its flavours from Montafon — from the mountains and meadows to the people rooted here. Almost everything comes from local producers the team knows personally.
The day begins with fresh bread, mountain cheese, homemade jams and coffee that simply smells like a good start. Meals are enjoyed in spaces as varied as the guests themselves: at bright wooden tables with mountain views, in cosy alcoves or wherever the light pours in through the large windows. At lunchtime, small warm dishes are served, and in the afternoon there’s sweet pastry and cake.

In the Maisäß Spa on the top floor, you can swim in the infinity pool with views of the mountain peaks. The space is bright, modern and perfect for those looking for quiet.
