Anyone planning a Lapland trip with kids is essentially looking for four things: a winter experience that genuinely excites kids, a trip that is easy to organise without stress, a place that does not feel like mass tourism infrastructure, and nature that looks the way you imagined it as a child: white, quiet and vast.
On this page you will find everything you need to make your decision: why Lapland works so well with children, the best time to travel, what to expect, and why Salla is the most convincing answer to all of these questions. It is Lapland in its most authentic form: more than 10,000 reindeer, a national park right next to the ski resort, and activities that children will not forget. This is Lapland as it truly is.
The real Lapland with kids, far from the tourist crowds
Rovaniemi is already quite well known. Salla is better for families looking for peace and authenticity. No mass tourism, no staged experience worlds. Instead, traces of traditional Lapland culture, Arctic wilderness, and a place that does not treat the “Sustainable Travel Finland” label as a marketing tool but lives it as an attitude. The national park, ski resort, reindeer farm and accommodation are all located so close together that families do not waste energy on long transfers.
You can find the full report and all background information about Salla in our detailed guide.

Four Lapland experiences kids and parents will not forget
Reindeer safari in Salla Wilderness Park: Wooden sleds, feeding moss from your hand, and a reindeer driving licence. Authentic reindeer herding rooted in traditional Lapland culture rather than a petting zoo.
Snowmobile safari with Arctic Circle Safaris: Through snowy forests up to the Ruuhitunturi fell. Campfire stop, views stretching all the way to Russia. Equipment included.
Hiking in Salla National Park: Finland’s 41st national park since 2022. No tickets, no entrance fees. Laavu shelters with fireplaces along the trails.
Skiing, snow tubing and fat biking at Salla Ski & Active: Clear, uncrowded slopes with no waiting times. Plus snow tubing, fat biking and sledding for all ages.
March beats January: the honest truth about travel time
In January, Salla only gets around 2.5 hours of daylight. In March, it is nine. Add to that milder temperatures, reliable snow, and paradoxically better chances of seeing the Northern Lights, because the skies in spring are clearer than in mid winter. The Easter holidays are a perfect fit. It is better to avoid the Finnish winter holidays, as even quieter regions become busy during that time.
When the sky dances: Northern Lights in the aurora zone
Salla is located right in the middle of the aurora zone. Nothing can be guaranteed, but if you stay for several nights and use the app “My Aurora Forecast & Alerts“, your chances increase significantly. The best spots are the Kaunisharju Observation Point and the Itärinteentie ski area, both offering unobstructed views in all directions.
