At the valley station of the Kanzelwand cable car in Riezlern, the excitement for a family hike in Kleinwalsertal begins the moment Burmi the marmot smiles down from the gondola. It’s like a secret signal that the mountain adventure is about to start – relaxed and easy, even for families with little hiking experience. If your accommodation is a Bergbahn Unlimited partner, you can use the Kanzelwand cable car and other lifts daily and free of charge with the Allgäu-Walser Pass.

Once at the top, the Burmi Water Trail starts right at the mountain station. The path is 1.4 km long, mostly flat, and perfectly suitable for strollers. It follows a gentle mountain stream, where kids can experiment with water wheels, dams, and wooden channels. They learn to block, redirect, and let the water flow – all by playing. A simple walk quickly turns into an exciting outdoor adventure.

Along the way, wooden loungers, a picnic area, and a small reservoir offer plenty of spots to take a break. Swimming isn’t on the agenda here, but the reflections of the mountains on the water are more than worth a pause. And if you’re up for more, you can continue on to the Kanzelwand summit or hike to the next alpine hut.

Quick Summit Joy and a Sea of Mountain Views

If there’s still energy left after building dams and spinning water wheels, you can extend your family hike in Kleinwalsertal and head for the summit. From the mountain station, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the top – a manageable 90-meter ascent for sure-footed kids.
At the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the valley, a small summit cross perfect for a keepsake photo, and a summit book to leave your mark. Just below, the Kanzelwand via ferrata winds its way along the rockface – fun to watch as climbers make their way across.

Scenic Spot with a Terrace and Affogato

Just a few steps from the mountain station, Adlerhorst awaits – a modern alpine restaurant with a spacious sun terrace, organic cuisine, and homemade pastries. There’s a playground right next door for the kids, and the menu features plenty of favorites for little mountain adventurers. For dessert, parents can treat themselves to an affogato and drift off to Italy for a moment.
Back in the valley, just cross the street and you’ll find yourself at the Riezlern outdoor pool – the perfect ending to a summer day in the mountains, complete with a waterslide, diving platform, and your favorite ice cream.
