Why Cross-Country Skiing Works Surprisingly Well for Families

For a long time, cross-country skiing had a very specific image in our minds: athletic, technical, something more suited to adults. A winter sport that demands stamina and balance. And then we found ourselves on the trails in the Kaiserwinkl and realized how wrong that assumption was.
The Kaiserwinkl is one of Tyrol’s largest and most beautiful cross-country regions. And that’s exactly why it’s such a surprisingly good place to ease into it as a family. No pressure to master skating technique or look like Olympians. Just moving at a pace that works for kids.

Cross-Country Skiing with Kids at the Nordic Center Kössen

We started at the Nordic Center Kössen. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this place knows what it’s doing. The shop has been around for over 50 years, offering rentals and expert advice, and owner Markus Weingartner is a well-known name in Austrian cross-country skiing. You can rent your gear easily on site and head straight out onto the trails.

There are introductory lessons available, including special sessions for families. They’re ideal for learning technique, rhythm, and balance step by step. After just one hour, you already have a solid foundation for classic cross-country skiing. And if you’re used to downhill skiing, trying out skate skiing can be an exciting next step. The Nordic Center also features a biathlon facility, where you can join a trial session on Wednesdays and Fridays.
With the Kaiserwinkl Card, you receive 50 percent off all introductory courses.

Cross-Country Skiing: Quiet, Yet Surprisingly Effective

What we loved most is that cross-country skiing offers a different kind of winter movement. Calmer than downhill skiing, less noisy, and far less hectic. And yet, it’s still a real workout. You’re outside in the fresh air, moving steadily, finding your own rhythm.
The trails in the Kaiserwinkl are mostly flat, wide, and very family-friendly. Many of the blue routes are perfect for beginners and kids. There’s plenty of space to try things out without feeling in anyone’s way or under observation.
One major plus for families: using the cross-country trails is free of charge. It’s not only easy on the budget, but for many it’s a genuine reason to give cross-country skiing a try in the first place.
From a parent’s perspective, cross-country skiing is a true winter ace. It engages almost the entire body—arms, legs, and core working together. In fact, up to 95 percent of your muscles are activated, so sore muscles are definitely possible. At the same time, it feels remarkably grounding. No lifts, no waiting, no crowds.
Maybe that’s exactly why, by the end of the weekend, we had already decided: skate skiing has officially made it onto our family wish list.
