Just One Hour from MunichโYet Wonderfully Peaceful

If we had to choose just one winter activity that truly makes everyone happy, sledding would be right at the top of the list. It has the perfect mix of movement, nature, and that little thrill in your stomach. The Aschinger Alm is located in the Kaiserwinkl region of Tyrol, just about an hour from Munich, and itโs a genuine winter gem that not many people seem to know about yet. Thereโs also no need to play trunk Tetris, since you can rent sleds free of charge at the hut and simply return them at the bottom.
From the parking lot just past the Buchberg volunteer fire station, the trail heads south across open meadows toward the forest edge, then winds upward through the woods in a series of gentle switchbacks. Just follow the signposts. The three-kilometer route is very manageableโeven if your kids arenโt hiking up mountains every weekend. Ours tested โshortcutsโ through the forest and played in the snow along the way. In short, there was no negotiating or dragging involvedโwe made it to the top in a relaxed mood.
Stopping for a Break, Warming Up, and Enjoying the Aschinger Alm
The well-earned meal at the Aschinger Alm is genuinely excellent. From traditional Tyrolean dishes like Frittatensuppe to a trio of dumplings, thereโs something for everyone. And for the kids, thereโs even a small playroom downstairs.
Refueled and ready, itโs time for the ride down. The sleds are available for rent in a trailer right in front of the hut. Just grab one and youโre good to go. Kids under ten are best riding together with a parent. The descent takes about 20 minutesโfull of rosy cheeks and happy squeals. At the bottom, you simply leave the sled at the designated collection point and youโre right back at the parking lot.
One important thing to keep in mind: the ascent and descent share the same track. So stay alert, especially for sleds coming uphill. And definitely wear a helmet. It suits adults just as well as kids. Everything feels more relaxed when everyoneโs head is properly protected.
Experiences like this quickly make you want more. The Kaiserwinkl shows just how varied winter with kids can beโbeyond daily ski days. Weโve linked our personal favorites for you here, from snow tubing to cross-country skiing.
