The natural stage of the Pflersch Valley

In the Pflersch Valley in South Tyrol, water isnโt just a scenic backdrop. Itโs the element that sets the tone. Especially around the โHรถlle,โ the valleyโs most impressive waterfall, you can feel its power with every step. The cool mist brushing against your skin on warm days. The dance of light and spray between the rocks. And the deep rumble as the water crashes down into the depths. This is a family hike where nature speaks to all the senses.
On the way to the Furtalm, you’ll follow a family-friendly trail that calls for a bit of stamina but never overwhelms. You’ll pass thundering waterfalls, a viewing platform with a refreshing mist, and interactive nature spots that make the trail especially exciting for kidsโespecially if you join the guided hike organized weekly by the local tourism board. At the top, the alpine hut welcomes you with homemade Schlutzkrapfen, a small playground, and stunning views of the Pflerscher Tribulaun.
Starting point: Innerpflersch
The hike starts in Innerpflersch, at the small parking area right by the โHaus der Vereine.โ The trail begins gently along a gravel road past Hotel Feuerstein before it gradually heads uphill. In total, the route covers around 10 kilometers (about 6 km up and 4 km back) with roughly 450 meters of elevation gain.
With enough breaks and snacks, itโs doable for kids from around 7 years old. Younger ones can hike part of the way or enjoy a ride in the carrier.
A highlight along the way: The โHรถlleโ waterfall
Halfway through the hike, youโll reach what might be the coolest stop on the trailโliterally: the Hรถlle waterfall. You can hear it roaring long before you see it, becoming a powerful natural soundtrack. The brand-new viewing platform lets you hover right above it and gives you a refreshing cool-down mid-hike.
And itโs not just at the waterfallโyouโll be accompanied by water throughout the walk. There are smaller waterfalls and babbling streams crossing the path again and again. Perfect spots for the kids to take a play break and get their hands and feet wet.
A destination with a view: Furtalm
At the top, a true favorite spot is waiting: the Furtalm. Cows graze peacefully around the hut, families relax on the sunny terrace. On the menu: South Tyrolean specialties like dumplings, speck, and sweet yeast bunsโhomemade and delicious. Even the coffee is worth a mention and tastes twice as good with a view like this.
Kids can run around at the small playground or watch the animals with wide eyes. Inside, it’s warm and cozy; outside, thereโs fresh mountain air and a panorama that makes you want to linger. Once you sit down here, you wonโt want to leave anytime soon.
The way back to the parking lot is a breeze after such a hearty breakโjust follow the forest road down.
Guided hike with a local expert
If youโre up for a little extra adventure, you can join hiking guide Andreas Brunnerโand itโs definitely worth it. He turns a simple walk into a fun outdoor expedition for the whole family. With his deep knowledge of the local nature, he can tell you something about almost every plant and keeps the kids so entertained along the way that the 10 kilometers fly by.
- How do ants change the color of flowers?
- How can you tell where water is just by looking at plants?
- How do you turn a hazel branch into a flute?
Kids love his little experiments and stories, and even grown-ups will discover things theyโve probably walked past a hundred times without noticing.
The guided hike takes place every Thursday, and you can sign up by calling Gossensass Tourism.
