Just 20 minutes from Grenoble, right in the heart of the Chartreuse mountains, thereโs a spot tailor-made for families who love nature, adventure and trying something new: Col de Porte. This time, instead of a classic hike, we went for something different โ summer biathlon โ and it turned out to be a total hit, even with the little ones.
Summer biathlon for kids โ is that a thing?
Oh yes โ and itโs brilliant! With the help of a super friendly coach, we got to experience our very own biathlon session โ complete with child-friendly air rifles, professional-style targets, and of course: run first, then shoot.
It felt a bit unfamiliar at first, but it quickly got really exciting. The kids started off with a little wooden stool to steady themselves, learned how to handle the rifle safely, load it properly, and aim like pros. Then came the sprint โ a quick dash across the field, down into prone position, andโฆ try to hit the target again. Not easy when your heartโs still pounding and youโre trying to stay calm!
All in, all fun
No surprise โ the kids had the most fun. They did lap after lap, wanted to start over again and again, and were seriously proud of every hit they landed.
The best part? The coach had a fantastic sense of balance between clear guidance and relaxed encouragement. It wasnโt about performance โ it was about giving it a go, being brave โ and thatโs what made it one of our absolute favourite moments.
Beyond biathlon: Outdoor paradise at Col de Porte
Col de Porte isnโt just for biathlon โ itโs a brilliant all-rounder for families who love being outdoors:
- Hiking: Peaks like Chamechaude, La Pinรฉa or Charmant Som offer varied trails and stunning views.
- Mountain biking: Well-marked routes cater to every level โ from cruisy rides to sporty challenges.
- Nature spotting: The Chartreuse massif is full of plants, wildlife and peace โ ideal for curious kids with binoculars or anyone in need of a deep breath.
