Picture this: you wake up in the morning. Right at the head of the bed is a panoramic window, through which the sun is just climbing over the vineyards, row by row, slowly, until the whole valley glows. This isn’t the first day of your holiday. This is every single day at Kellerstöckl Königsberg.

Right in the middle of the wine-growing area of Southern Burgenland, under 70 square metres across two levels, a fire bowl by the door, an EV charging point at the covered bike parking area. We spent a few nights here and came away understanding exactly why Kellerstöckl cottages (think of them as a kind of tiny house) suit families looking for peace and quiet so well.

What a Kellerstöckl actually is

A Kellerstöckl is traditionally a small, free-standing wine-and-tool cottage right in the middle of the vineyard. Once used for work around wine growing, today it’s increasingly being converted into stylish little houses for travellers. What makes them the perfect family accommodation: they’re small enough to feel intimate, and large enough to comfortably fit four people. They sit away from the crowds, and yet right in the middle of the landscape. And they have something hotels rarely offer: their own outdoor space, their own kitchen, one you get to fill with your own rhythm.

Kellerstöckl Das Königsberg is a particularly lovely example. It sits in the wine-growing area around Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg, in Southern Burgenland. All around, and reachable partly by bike too, you’ll find numerous Buschenschank wine taverns. By day, the terrace looks out over gentle vine-covered hills, stretching all the way to the Hungarian border. Anyone planning a family holiday from here has everything within reach: Raab Nature Park with canoeing and wild riverbanks, Friedensburg Schlaining with its 800 years of history, and the Therme Stegersbach for rainy days.

Inside: design-conscious, thoughtfully laid out, with everything a family needs

The Kellerstöckl spans two levels, offering everything you’d need for a longer stay. Downstairs is an open-plan living room with a dining nook and a fully equipped kitchen: dishwasher, retro fridge with freezer compartment, oven, four hob rings, a Nespresso machine complete with capsules, a full set of crockery and cutlery, pots, pans, tea towels. Everything’s there. Mineral water, beer and regional wines are on hand at cellar-door prices, since the winemaker is essentially your host.

The living room has a smart TV with Netflix access and a smart radio. Air conditioning and underfloor heating mean the cottage works year-round. The bathroom, with a rain shower, hairdryer, towels and all toiletries, is on the same level.

Up the wooden staircase, you reach the sleeping gallery: a double bed with the panoramic window looking out towards a cherry tree and the vineyards, plus four stackable single beds for children, a sofa, and chests of drawers. The layout is clever: families with two or three children get enough space without piling on top of one another, and families with babies can request a travel cot.

Outside: a fire bowl and a cherry tree for shade

The outdoor area of the Kellerstöckl is what turns the stay from an ordinary night away into a genuine slice of holiday. The wooden terrace sits beneath an old cherry tree, blossoming in spring and providing shade come summer. A large garden table with six chairs, four sun loungers and a grill rack make the cottage a perfect summer stay, and the fire bowl turns every evening into something special.

On top of that, there’s a covered bike parking area with a socket for e-bikes, important given how lovely Southern Burgenland is by bike, with numerous Buschenschank taverns within easy cycling distance. Anyone driving an EV will also find charging infrastructure right at the house.

Family tips for your stay

Get out on the bike. The Buschenschank taverns in Eisenberg, Deutsch Schützen and the surrounding area are all easily reachable by bike. Tip: Buschenschank Kopfensteiner in Deutsch Schützen.

Nearby restaurants:

  • Csencsits in Harmisch (Buschenschank in summer, fine dining year-round)
  • Kranich at Burg Schlaining

Day trips both parents and kids will enjoy: Raab Nature Park (canoeing from age 4), Friedensburg Schlaining (children’s tour from age 6), Allegria Therme Stegersbach (a good option for an arrival or departure day).

Kellerstöckl Königsberg is one of three places to stay we tested and found especially worth recommending on our trip through Burgenland. If you’d like to see what the other two look like (a tiny house right on Lake Neusiedl, and a historic Streckhof farmhouse in the middle of the wine village of Lutzmannsburg), you’ll find them in our big Burgenland family report.
