As soon as you step out onto the tidal flats at Plage du Prieuré in Dinard with Fanny Le Hir from Atelier Retour de Pêche, an entirely different world unfolds. The ebbing tide reveals the seabed, a landscape full of secrets, visible only for a few hours. It teems with tiny wonders you would never notice on your own.

Hands-on learning and wide-eyed wonder

With her infectious enthusiasm, Fanny turns the walk into exactly what it is meant to be: an experience. Even though the tour is held entirely in French, it hardly matters. Her gestures, her smile, and her clear way of explaining things make everything easy to understand. Together, we head out into the tidal flats at low tide. We learn which shells can be collected and when, why size and season matter, and how, with a bit of skill, you can even coax razor clams out of the sand. Better than any treasure hunt!

Nature study between ebb and flow

The mudflat walk—just a few hundred meters out to sea in this case—is full of aha and oh-wow moments: from marveling at a razor clam that can be coaxed out of the sand with a bit of salt to giggling when spotting a quick little crab. For everyone, it’s a true change of perspective, seeing the sea not just as a backdrop or playground but as a living ecosystem.

A culinary finale by the sea

The adventure ends with a delicious touch as Fanny sets up a small picnic of Breton delicacies right on the beach. She has written her own cookbook and knows exactly how to turn the treasures of the sea into something special on the plate. Her seaweed dip is a delightful surprise, and the Gillette Bretonne instantly became the kids’ favorite dish. Food lovers are in the best hands with Fanny.

Practical info and tips

To make the most of your mudflat walk, be sure to check the tide schedule first. The walk is only possible at low tide. Also essential are waterproof shoes—whether rubber boots, water shoes, or old sneakers. A windproof jacket helps against the breeze that almost always drifts in from the sea. The tour lasts about two hours.
