The Wimbachklamm gorge in Berchtesgaden is just the perfect place for a lovely family walk and a wonderful day out together. This short but impressive gorge is sure to get your heart racing – whether you’re young or young at heart! Even the entrance to the gorge is a sight to behold! Thundering waterfalls and glowing green rocks form a backdrop that will fascinate kids and adults alike.

The path through the 200-metre-long gorge is a real treat! It leads over narrow footbridges that run directly along the imposing rock faces. Although the passage is completed quite quickly (approx. 20 minutes), it is well worth pausing to enjoy the sight of the forces of nature in peace. A visit in the early morning or late afternoon is particularly impressive, when the number of visitors is lower and you can experience the gorge in almost mystical silence.

Hike to Wimbach Castle

If you’re looking for something a little more relaxing after exploring the gorge, why not take a leisurely hike to the Wimbachschloss? It’s a great way to wind down and enjoy the beautiful scenery. After your lovely family trip to the Wimbachklamm, why not take a little detour on a 90-minute walk? It’s a great way to explore more of the area and it’s well signposted, so you’ll never get lost! You’ll find yourself walking along the rushing water through the woods, which is really beautiful. As you go along, you’ll find lots of lovely little streams where the kids can play, and a few paths through the forest too. If you’re lucky enough to have no mobile reception, this path is a wonderful way to fully concentrate on nature and being together.

When you arrive at your destination, you’ll be treated to a lovely refreshment with delicious homemade regional dishes. This lovely family-run inn has a wonderfully warm atmosphere, and children will love the games and little surprises, like a mumble track.

When you’re ready to head back, why not take the Wimbachgries route? All you have to do is turn left into the meadow at the castle and you’ll be there in no time! You’ll find yourself in a huge scree landscape that has formed over millennia from rock demolitions. The wide riverbed of rubble gives the environment an almost moon-like atmosphere, which is really quite magical! Although the path is neither longer nor shorter, it brings a welcome variety. As soon as you rediscover the familiar path, you can return and relax and enjoy the last stretch to the car park. Here you will find even more favorite places in Berchtesgaden.
