Sledding Fun Right by Lake Königssee

We love sledding as a family outing. No technical training, no strategising over lift passes, no pressure. You sit down, push off — and you’re on your way.

At the Jenner in Berchtesgaden, we especially loved that our kids were able to ride on their own for the first time. You can rent sleds with hand brakes, which makes it feel much safer for beginners. The rental shop, Sport Renoth, is located right at the valley station — easy and convenient.

The Jennerhex toboggan run sits high above Lake Königssee and is probably the most well-known sledding run in the region. Not because it’s overly staged or dramatic — but because it’s well organised, offers breathtaking alpine views, and simply works beautifully with kids. Even if you want to go again. And again.

Where Is the Jennerhex Toboggan Run?

The Jennerhex toboggan run is located right next to Lake Königssee in Schönau am Königssee. You reach the start comfortably via the gondola of the Jennerbahn.

Once you arrive at the top station, keep left. From there, you can either walk a short stretch downhill or start slightly higher up and sled down to the official Jennerhex entry point. The access point is clearly signposted and easy to find.

Important to know: the Jennerhex is a natural snow run only, meaning it depends entirely on current snow conditions.

Jennerhex at a Glance

The run is about 1.4 kilometres long, well groomed and pleasantly winding. It’s not overly steep, but easy to control. There are no sudden hazards, no tight or blind corners. You can still pick up quite a bit of speed — not because of dramatic drops, but because the sled simply glides beautifully.

Especially with kids, we noticed something similar to skiing in the
Rossfeld ski area.
Repetition isn’t a downside. Quite the opposite. With every run, their line becomes more confident, the turns more controlled, their speed more intentional — and their style a little braver.

Organisation & Timing

One of the biggest advantages of sledding at the Jennerbahn in Berchtesgaden is the infrastructure.

Once you reach the bottom of the run, your sled is simply hooked onto the
Mitterkaser chairlift and transported back up for you. No one has to carry their sled uphill. That’s what makes multiple runs in a row feel genuinely relaxed — even with kids. After as many laps as you like, you can comfortably take the gondola back down into the valley.

Between runs, plan for a break at the Mitterkaseralm, also known as Klaus Maxei. A hot cup of tea, a plate of Kaiserschmarrn, rosy cheeks around the table — winter at its best.

To make it truly worthwhile, set aside half a day. Just one single run would feel like a bit of a waste given the ticket price. One full lap, including the lift ride and descent, takes around 30 to 40 minutes.

Who Is the Jennerhex Perfect For?

The Jennerhex is a great fit if you:

  • are looking for a well-organised toboggan run in Berchtesgaden
  • are out with kids who love speed but don’t want to hike uphill after every run
  • want to combine your sledding day with a walk along Lake Königssee
  • are planning a winter experience without needing full ski gear

It’s less ideal if you’re specifically looking for a long, lift-free natural toboggan run where the uphill walk is part of the adventure.

Detour to Lake Königssee

If you park at the Jennerbahn, Lake Königssee is just a few steps away. Simply leave the car where it is and walk the five minutes down to the lake.

In winter, Lake Königssee feels like its own quiet little world — and it’s absolutely worth visiting before or after your sledding adventure. Especially in the colder months, a 15-minute walk to the Malerwinkel viewpoint truly lives up to its name.

If the lake isn’t frozen, a boat trip across
Lake Königssee with kids
to St. Bartholomä is another beautiful way to round off the day.
