Jewel Trail, Ostler Hut & a day full of family time with a view

If you’re on a family holiday in Pfronten, there’s no way around Breitenberg – and that’s a good thing. Not only is it the region’s local mountain, but also a true highlight for families who love nature, fresh air, and good food – all without needing to plan a full-day hike.
Your adventure starts off easy with a ride on the Breitenberg Cable Car, which is even free with the KönigsCard. From the top, it’s up to you: grab a bite to eat, head out for a hike, or take the chairlift – the Hochalpbahn – which brings you to the start of the Jewel Trail. The ride isn’t included in the card, but it’s definitely worth the extra if you’re exploring with kids.
The Jewel Trail – A treasure hunt on the move
The Jewel Trail is a 2.5 km adventure hike downhill – filled with interactive stations, hands-on tasks, and a little treasure waiting at the end. There’s climbing, puzzling, collecting – and most importantly: lots of laughter along the way.
The kids dive right into the story of the mysterious jewels, solve tricky challenges, and are thrilled to take home a personal treasure at the end. And us parents? We enjoy the path, the views, and the relaxed pace.
Ostler Hut: Alpine views and seriously good food
If you’ve got energy to spare before starting the Jewel Trail (or just a good appetite), take a detour to the Ostler Hut. It’s about a 40-minute hike up – with stunning views, hearty food, and that rewarding post-hike feeling. Kids can enjoy their favorites, while grown-ups dive into delicious Allgäu mountain cuisine. You’ll sit outside, gaze at the peaks, sip a cappuccino, chai latte, or a cool Radler – and the kids? They’ll be happily munching on the best Kaiserschmarrn in the Alps.
Heading back down – with a playground stop
At the end of the Jewel Trail, the Hochalp Hut awaits – the perfect spot for one last break with a playground and sunny terrace. (Psst… this is also where the kids can search for their jewel treasure.) After that, the gondola takes you comfortably back down to the valley.
And if you’re up for a little cool down after the hike, make a quick detour to Lake Hopfensee – it feels like a slice of summer holiday in the south.
