Sledding in Munich: The Best Family Toboggan Runs Around the City

The moment the first snowflakes start to fall, there’s no holding back: sleds, zip bobs, and snow sliders come out of the basement, the warmest winter jackets go on, and off we go. When it comes to sledding in Munich and the surrounding area, we’ve discovered some wonderful toboggan runs over the past few years, far away from the busy ski slopes. Depending on the age of your kids, you can either take the lift to the top or turn it into a small winter hike followed by a fun sled ride down.
Here are our favorite spots for unforgettable snowy fun while sledding in and around Munich:

Family-Friendly Toboggan Run with a Play Paradise

About an hour from Munich, in the Kaiserwinkl region, you’ll find an especially family-friendly toboggan run at the Aschinger Alm. From the parking lot in Ebbs, a well-groomed forest and meadow trail leads uphill for around three kilometers. The incline is gentle and steady, making it very manageable even with kids.
At the top, a cozy mountain hut with a sunny terrace awaits. Families will appreciate the small indoor play area in the basement, and in good weather there’s also an outdoor playground. The food is genuinely excellent, ranging from cheese fondue to a trio of dumplings and classic Kaiserschmarrn. Another highlight is the free sled rental: simply grab a sled at the top and return it at the collection point across from the parking lot at the bottom.
The roughly three-kilometer descent is varied but not too steep, making it ideal for sledding with children. That said, do keep an eye out for hikers coming up the trail. For us, it’s one of the most relaxed and family-friendly sledding spots near Munich.

Sledding and Kaiserschmarrn at Lake Schliersee

The Schliersee region is a true winter paradise for families. One wonderful route takes you up to the Almbad Huberspitz, where a roughly one-hour winter hike awaits. Once you reach the top, you can warm up with homemade Kaiserschmarrn and soak in the views. Afterwards, the natural toboggan run brings you back down into the valley. A special bonus: Almbad Huberspitz places great value on organic quality and regional ingredients — and if you’d like, you can even stay overnight to extend the winter magic.

Hiking and Sledding at Lake Spitzingsee

The Firstalm toboggan run is no longer a hidden secret, but with the right timing you can still avoid the crowds. Our trick: we start our hike from the Kurvenlift up to the Firstalm in the late afternoon, when most visitors are already on their way back. After about an hour of walking, we enjoy a hot chocolate at the Obere Firstalm and then race down the perfectly groomed track towards the lake.

To round off the day, we stop at the Alperie, conveniently located on the way home — and in winter, there’s even a small Christmas market in the courtyard.

Natural Toboggan Run at the Buchelalpe

A true insider tip for families is the Buchelalpe in the Allgäu, near Bad Hindelang. The ascent follows the picturesque “Zwergenweg” (Dwarf Trail), lined with lovingly crafted figurines and small surprises — a real highlight for kids. After about an hour of hiking through snowy forests and open fields, you reach the cosy mountain hut. There, homemade dishes made from regional organic ingredients await you — from hearty soups to freshly baked cakes. Re-energised, you can then enjoy a safe yet exciting sled ride back down into the valley. A winter adventure the whole family will love!

Sledding in Munich: Blomberg near Bad Tölz

The Blomberg near Bad Tölz is perfect for a spontaneous snow day, as it takes less than an hour to get there from Munich. At the valley station of the Blombergbahn, you can buy one or several lift rides to the top. If you prefer to walk, it takes about an hour to reach the Blomberghaus, where you’ll find a cosy spot to warm up. From there, you can sled all the way back down into the valley. Especially convenient: you can rent sleds directly on site.

Sledging and/or skiing at Kreuzmöslberg

If you can’t quite decide whether you’re more in the mood for sledging or skiing with your kids, Kreuzmöslberg is the perfect place to go. On this hillside, sledging takes place on the left-hand side, while the right-hand side is reserved for practising your ski turns. A small ski lift takes skiers up the 300-metre slope, while those on sledges need to pull theirs up themselves. But it’s well worth the effort: once at

With Little Kids to the Hörnle

If you want to avoid the crowds of the big ski areas, the Hörnle is a charming alternative. From the car park, a nostalgic two-seater chairlift takes you up to 1,400 metres. At the mountain station, kids can play in the snow while parents warm up with hot drinks inside the DAV hut. The 4.5-kilometre toboggan ride back down guarantees a real adventure. And if you don’t have your own sled, you can rent one directly at the valley station.

Insider Tip for Sledding near Munich: Tobogganing on the Jenner

If you’re looking for a spectacular toboggan run, you’ll find it on the Jenner in the Berchtesgadener Land. The cable car takes you up high, where a kilometre-long natural sledding track winds down into the valley. The view of the snow-covered Königssee makes the experience truly unforgettable. Perfectly combinable with a stop at the Jenneralm, which impresses with floor-to-ceiling windows and traditional Alpine cuisine.

Sledding Right in the Middle of Munich

If you don’t want to travel far, Munich itself offers great spots for sledding. One of the most popular is the Monopteros in the English Garden. After the ride down, you can warm up at the Milchhäusl or at Café Reitschule. Another fantastic option is the Luitpoldpark, whose northern hill turns into a true winter playground for families. Afterwards, it’s worth stopping by the Bamberger Haus, where delicious pizza awaits at Ciao Francesco. You’ll find even more lovely ideas for winter in Munich with kids in the linked guide.
