When Munich switches into winter mode and the city becomes just a little quieter, it’s the perfect time for families to enjoy small everyday escapes. Because even when it’s cold, winter thankfully isn’t limited to indoor activities. Sure, it can be more of a challenge to convince everyone to head outside than it is in summer — but that’s exactly why we’ve gathered 10 ideas for beautiful winter outings in and around Munich.

1. Winter Hike to Huberspitz: A Few Meters Up, Big Rewards

The Almbad Huberspitz is perfect for anyone who wants to get a dose of crisp winter air with kids — without any complications. The path climbs gently, with small forest sections in between, and ends with a panorama bonus and a truly delicious Kaiserschmarrn as the grand finale. Ideal for cold, clear days when you’re craving the mountains but not the effort of a challenging tour.

If there’s enough snow, you can take the sled back down to the parking lot.

2. KUNSTLABOR 2: Goodbye Winter Grey, Hello Colour Mode

At KUNSTLABOR 2, winter suddenly turns wonderfully bright: room installations, street art, projections — kids stumble from one aha-moment to the next wow-effect. Parents get urban art, kids get big-scale adventure. The perfect destination when the weather can’t decide between drizzle and tiny snowflakes.

3. Bergtierpark Blindham: Winter Fur Meets Winter Fun

The Bergtierpark Blindham is a perfect hit for a winter outing near Munich: animals in their thick winter coats, play areas, and little hills where kids race around with rosy cheeks. Deer stand against a snowy backdrop, goats bleat softly into the winter air — and the kids are automatically in full explorer mode.

If it gets too chilly outside, there’s a huge indoor play barn with obstacle courses, a sand area, and more.

4. Waldcafé in the Allgäu: A Small Outing with a Big Feel-Good Factor

The Waldcafé is one of those places where, after ten minutes, you decide you should come more often. Not because it’s just around the corner, but because a visit there feels like a mini holiday. A short walk through the winter forest, then straight into the warmth for cake, hot chocolate, and that uniquely relaxed Allgäu feeling. Outside, there’s plenty of space for kids to play.

A special highlight in every season is the giant swing, which lets you soar a little closer to the mountains.

5. Egyptian Museum: Dive into a Different World and Time

The new exhibition at the State Museum of Egyptian Art, “Childhood on the Nile,” is perfect for winter: warm lighting, clear architecture, and fascinating exhibits. Kids are encouraged to sniff, puzzle, explore, and get hands-on. Because when you dive into a completely new world, you want to truly understand it — and this exhibition makes that wonderfully easy.

6. Winter Hiking at Spitzingsee: Strudel Power, Summit Views & Sledding Fun

Spitzingsee is basically Munich’s family playground in winter: easy to reach, stunningly beautiful, and offering just the right mix of adventure and kid-friendly simplicity. Our favourite destination: the Obere Firstalm. The trail up is perfect for kids — not too long, not too steep, and full of little highlights. Ice plates crackle underfoot, snow mounds become mini mountains, and someone always discovers the perfect snowball texture.

At the top, you’ll find the winter trio that instantly puts families in a great mood: punch, apple strudel, and cosy hut vibes. A quick warm-up, soak it all in — and then comes the best part: the ride down.

Sledding back into the valley is the moment kids can’t wait to tell their friends about. And honestly: parents usually end up grinning wider than expected too. A winter outing near Munich that boosts energy, gets everyone moving, and lifts the mood — no complicated planning, maximum fun factor.

7. Winter Picnic in the English Garden: A Family Date with Punch and Cookies

Winter picnic? Yes! In the English Garden it works surprisingly well: a thermos of warm punch, cookies (ideally the MOGLI speculoos cookies), a big blanket — and you’ve got the most relaxed family date of the winter. Pick your favourite spot, ideally one of the many benches, and get comfy. Especially with friends, it’s wonderful, because the kids can roam freely and happily while the adults enjoy the moment.

8. Buchelalpe Bad Hindelang: Our Personal Favourite Sledding Route

Leisurely uphill, fast and fun downhill: the Buchelalpe is one of those routes you try once and immediately add to your winter hit list. The ascent is pleasant, just the right length for families, and leads through a winter landscape that becomes more beautiful with every step. At the top, the view opens up over Bad Hindelang — so stunning you automatically stop for a moment to take it all in.

The Alpe itself is the bonus that keeps families coming back. Here you’ll find homemade organic dishes, warm and simply delicious. A soup, a hot drink — and the kids are instantly ready for the downhill ride again.

9. Wildtierpark Poing: The Quiet Side of Wildlife in Winter

For kids, the Wildtierpark Poing is something truly special in winter. With fewer visitors around, the forest feels almost like it belongs to them alone — and the animals often appear calmer and closer than in summer. Deer wander curiously right up to the trail, and the wild boars dig with focus in the frozen ground.

Kids can spot tracks in the snow, tune in to animal sounds more easily, and observe how different species cope with the cold. The circular trail is easy to walk, with plenty of little viewing spots along the way — and every now and then comes that magical moment when a child suddenly whispers, “Look! There’s another one!”

10. Kunsthalle München – “Digital by Nature” Between Pixels and Poetry

The exhibition “Digital by Nature” at the Kunsthalle instantly sparks children’s curiosity: light art, digital nature scenes, and installations you don’t just look at — you experience them. Parents will love a museum that feels modern, relaxed, and wonderfully kid-friendly. The perfect warm-up outing for frosty days.
